Local Business Chat is a new community board on OurLocalRI.com where Rhode Island business owners can ask questions, start discussions, share recommendations, post announcements, and connect with other Ocean State entrepreneurs. It's a private, members-only space — not a public forum — so the conversations stay focused, respectful, and genuinely useful.
What Is Local Business Chat?
Think of Local Business Chat as a Reddit-style community board, but exclusively for verified Rhode Island business owners. Members can:
💬 Start a post — Ask a question, start a discussion, share a recommendation, or post an announcement. Posts are organized by category (General, Question, Discussion, Recommendation, Announcement) so it's easy to find what's relevant to you.
👍 Upvote posts — The most helpful, interesting posts rise to the top. Upvoting helps surface the conversations the community finds most valuable.
💬 Comment and reply — Threaded comments let you dig into a topic, answer a question, or add your perspective. The threading keeps conversations organized and easy to follow.
🔗 Share links and resources — URLs in posts are automatically turned into clickable links, so you can share your website, a helpful article, or a resource with the community.
📅 Post once per day — To keep the board balanced and spam-free, each business can start one new post per day. Commenting and upvoting are unlimited.
Who Can Use Local Business Chat?
Local Business Chat is a members-only feature available to Premium and Platinum OurLocalRI.com business listings. That means every participant is a verified Rhode Island business owner — not a random internet stranger, not an out-of-state spammer, not a bot. When you post or comment, you're talking to peers who understand the local market, the local challenges, and the local opportunities.
If you're on a free Verified listing and want to join the conversation, upgrading to Premium or Platinum unlocks Local Business Chat along with all the other Premium features — coupons, events, business posts, video embeds, and more.
Why We Built It
One of the most common things we heard from Rhode Island business owners was a simple one: "I wish I had a place to talk to other local owners." Not a Facebook group full of national noise. Not a LinkedIn feed full of self-promotion. A real, focused space where a plumber in Warwick could ask a question and get an answer from a plumber in Cranston, where a restaurant owner in Providence could swap notes with a café owner in Pawtucket.
Local Business Chat is our answer to that. It's small, focused, and Rhode Island-only — and it's only going to get better as more owners join and the conversations grow.
How to Get Started
If you're already a Premium or Platinum member, joining is simple:
1️⃣ Sign in to your OurLocalRI.com account using the Business Owner Login.
2️⃣ Open Local Business Chat from the account menu or the footer link.
3️⃣ Start posting — ask a question, share an update, or jump into an existing conversation.
When you post, you'll post as your business (your business name and a Premium or Platinum badge appear on your posts). OurLocalRI.com staff can also post as "OurLocalRI.com Staff" to share platform updates, announcements, and community-wide information.
What to Post About
Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas:
